13 DEGREE HOUSE

Experimenting with perspective, a line 13 degrees from front to back incorporates the notion of “forced perspective” used by Renaissance painters to visually extend a view. Borrowing from the clients’ equestrian interests, a language of barn design including diagonal bracing, a hay loft and sliding barn doors are used throughout to form and define spaces within.

SOLAR VILLAGE

Solar village is a prototypical design for an extended family compound. Grandparents would live in the center house flanked by extended family in houses on either side. The 3 houses together explore issues of familial communal spaces vs. private spaces. All 3 houses contain live / work space over the garages. Entries are shaded by photovoltaic solar panels.

BUTTERFLY HOUSE

Lifting wings to the sky, “Butterfly” collects rainwater at the center of its wing span and directs it, via a rain chain, to a concrete cistern for use as irrigation, all within view of the main indoor and outdoor living spaces.

PROJECT 7TEN

Designed as a teaching tool to promote sustainability, Project 710 is one of the first site built LEED Platinum houses in the country. Built on a tiny lot in Venice, it opens up to its side yard with a 40-foot-long passive solar wall of glass doors encouraging heat from southern sunlight to warm the interior in the winter. The same glass wall is naturally shaded in the summer (when the sun is high) by a long deck above serving the 2nd floor. On the 2nd story the deck is shaded by a solar panel trellis. The 2nd floor mass tilts in its entirety to collect sunlight to power solar panels and direct roof top rainwater to an underground cistern where it is saved for use as irrigation.

WESTSIDE STORY

Based on the musical West Side Story, (named for its stair-filled atrium surrounded by balconies) begs one to break out in song and dance while traversing up the stairway and around the balconies. This atrium serves as a focal point in visually connecting the 3 stories of living space for ease of communication in family life and opens out to a pool and outdoor yard.
